Through this slim transit point, roughly 20 to 25 percent of the world’s daily global petroleum consumption—amounting to approximately 20 million barrels per day—passes on its way to the markets of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Should this conduit be severed, or even functionally impeded, the cascading effects would not merely represent a market correction; they would trigger a systemic breakdown of the global economy, potentially sending crude oil prices hurtling toward an unprecedented $200 per barrel.

To understand the severity of this risk, one must first appreciate the fragile architecture of the modern energy market. Oil remains the lifeblood of industrial production, transportation, and agricultural supply chains. While the global energy transition toward renewables is underway, the world remains tethered to hydrocarbon dependence. A sudden, massive supply shock in the Persian Gulf would not allow for the luxury of a gradual adaptation. It would be an immediate, violent disruption that no amount of strategic petroleum reserves could sufficiently dampen.

The geopolitical calculus of a conflict between Washington and Tehran begins with the inevitability of asymmetric warfare. Iran, acknowledging that it cannot hope to defeat the United States in a conventional, force-on-force engagement—particularly given the overwhelming air and naval superiority of the U.S. Fifth Fleet—has spent decades perfecting the doctrine of "denial and deterrence."
