Buried beneath a mountain near Iran’s Natanz nuclear complex is a facility that may become one of the most consequential—and misunderstood—sites in the global nuclear debate.

Known outside Iran as “Pickaxe Mountain” and also associated with the name Mount Kolang Gaz-La, the deeply buried complex has attracted growing attention from governments, intelligence agencies, nuclear experts, and commercial satellite analysts. Iran says the site is connected to legitimate nuclear infrastructure, including the production or assembly of centrifuges. Critics fear its tunnels could eventually house sensitive enrichment equipment, nuclear material, or other activities that would be extraordinarily difficult to monitor.

What actually exists inside the mountain remains uncertain.

That uncertainty is precisely why Pickaxe Mountain matters.

The facility’s strategic importance is not based solely on what experts know. It is also based on what international inspectors cannot yet verify. Pickaxe Mountain is a large tunnel complex located near Natanz, one of the central locations in Iran’s nuclear program. Construction reportedly accelerated after earlier attacks damaged aboveground facilities associated with centrifuge production at Natanz.

Commercial satellite imagery has shown multiple tunnel entrances, support structures, security improvements, roads, and continued construction activity. Analysts have described the project as one of Iran’s deepest and most heavily protected nuclear-related facilities.

Some estimates place sections of the complex roughly 80 to 100 meters beneath the mountain, although the precise depth and internal layout are not publicly verified. Its underground location could make it significantly more difficult to damage than conventional industrial sites.

The size of the project has fueled speculation that Iran intends to use the complex for more than basic equipment storage. Possible functions discussed by outside analysts include centrifuge assembly, component manufacturing, protected storage, research laboratories, or, potentially, future uranium-enrichment operations.

However, evidence of a facility’s physical capacity is not proof of its current purpose.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is the institution best positioned to separate evidence from speculation.

Military intelligence can identify construction patterns and possible threats. Satellite companies can document surface activity. Governments can collect classified information. None of these substitutes for professional safeguards inspections.

IAEA access could help determine whether nuclear material is present, whether centrifuges have been installed, whether the facility matches Iran’s declared purpose, and whether monitoring equipment can provide continuing assurance.

The challenge is political.

This is how one suspected facility could affect an entire region.

The danger is not limited to Iran producing a bomb.

The greater long-term risk is the erosion of confidence in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the gradual emergence of several states capable of moving toward nuclear weapons on relatively short notice.

A Middle East filled with “threshold” nuclear states would be more difficult to stabilize than a region divided simply between nuclear and nonnuclear powers.

Could Pickaxe Mountain Trigger a New Arms Race?

Possibly—but not by itself.

Facilities do not make political decisions. Governments do.

Pickaxe Mountain becomes truly destabilizing if it combines with several other developments: the loss of effective inspections, growth in Iran’s enriched-uranium stockpile, installation of advanced centrifuges, evidence of weaponization work, regional missile competition, and collapsing diplomatic channels.

If those trends continue together, regional governments may conclude that international guarantees are no longer sufficient.

They could invest in uranium enrichment, reprocessing technology, longer-range missiles, advanced air defenses, or external nuclear guarantees.

The result would not necessarily be an immediate race to build bombs.

It could instead produce a subtler but still dangerous competition in which several countries develop the technology, materials, and expertise needed to approach the nuclear threshold.

That world would be filled with shorter warning times and more opportunities for miscalculation.

The Best Path: Access Before Assumptions

The most effective way to reduce the danger is also the least dramatic: negotiated, technically credible inspection access.

Iran would need to provide the IAEA with enough information to establish the facility’s purpose, confirm whether nuclear material is present, monitor sensitive equipment, and detect future changes.

Such an agreement would not require the United States to trust Iran.

Its consequences would not be.
